In Persian mythology, the god of light.
Mithras represented the power of goodness,
and promised his followers compensation for
present evil after death. Mithras was said to
have captured and killed the sacred bull,
from whose blood all life sprang. A bath in
the blood of a sacrificed bull formed part of
the initiation ceremeony. In 1954 remains of
a Roman temple dedicated to Mithras were
discovered in the City of London.
